Kris Aquino is Kristina Bernadette Cojuangco Aquino in real life. She was born on February 14, 1971 in the Philippines. Kris is the youngest of the five children of former president Corazon Cojuangco Aquino and former senator Benigno Aquino, Jr.
Kris Aquino was exposed to politics in her childhood. She was only seven years old when the parliamentary elections were held and her father was a candidate. Her father at that time was in prison due to martial law and Kris helped in the campaign for him at a very tender age. She joined campaign rallies for Ninoy and took the center stage to campaign for her father. That experience of Kris was documented in the front page of New York Times and in Time Magazine.
Since their family was in excile, Kris had to spend her elementary days in the United States. She returned to the Philippines with the rest of her family when her father was assassinated in 1983. Kris continued her elementary in Poveda Learning Center, then secondary school in Colegio San Agustin - Makati and finished her college at Ateneo de Manila University with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English Literature.
After her chaotic life in politics, Kris then ventured in show business. At an early age, Kris dreamt of joining showbiz and in 1986, her mother was the president of the Philippines then, she debuted in showbiz limelight. Kris made her first TV appearance in GMA-7 with Inday Badiday's showbiz talk show "See-Tru". It was reported that the first appearance of Kris in TV is the highest in TV ratings at all time registering a 80+% viewership in the entire Philippines.
In 1989, Kris Aquino was given her first show in TV titled "Luv Ko Si Kris" in ABS-CBN. It was a comedy show but later shifted to a Weekly Drama series. The said show however was short lived and Kris was sidelined for some time. She returned in 1992 with Hoy!, Gising! (Krisis Corner) with Ted Failon, Korina Sanchez, Julius Babao, Ruth Abao, Erwin Tulfo and (now senator) Francis Pangilinan. In the same year she hosted the showbiz talk show titled "Actually, Yun Na!" in RPN 9.
Kris hosted her own mid-afternoon talk show "The Kris Aquino Show" from 1994 to 1996 in PTV but later on moved to GMA-7 for three months. Kris also was a mainstay in "'Sang Linggo nAPO Sila", a noontime musical variety show in ABS-CBN with the APO Hiking Society.
Kris started her serious showbiz hosting in "Startalk" in GMA-7 with her friend Boy Abunda and Lolit Solis as co-hosts. The show was aired in a Sunday afternoon in the same time with its rival in ABS-CBN "Showbiz Lingo". "Startalk" didn't dominate its competitor in its days but was able to gain a wider viewership with the exclusive scoops they presented. Some of the "exclusives" they had were the :Jojo Veloso Scandal", "Gabby Concepcion and Jenny Sequia's separation", Rossana Roces revelation of her marital status' and more. However, the show's popularity was put into hold when Kris Aquino left it and joined the rival network ABS-CBN in 1996.
In the Kapamilya network, Kris was given a talk show titled "Today With Kris Aquino". It was considered as the "Oprah Winfrey Show" of the Philippines and it was the longest running morning talk show. The show was so popular thta Kris got her monicker as the "Philippines' Queen of Talk". The show ended in 2001 due to the network's program reshuffling after Noli de Castro decided to run for the Vice Presidency.
Due to her experience in "Startalk", Kris was then assigned to host the network's showbiz talk show titled "The Buzz" in 1999. "The Buzz" is actually a reunion of Kris and Boy Abunda as co-hosts after they left "Startalk". "The Buzz" is still going strong and topped the ratings in its airtime and Kris and Boy are joined by Ruffa Gutierrez as their main co-host after the original co-host Cristy Fermin was suspended by ABS-CBN.
In 2001, TV game shows in the Philippines were so popular with "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and "The Weakest Link" aired in IBC-13. ABS-CBN wasted no time and joined the game show bandwagon. They started with Kris Aquino hosting "Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba?" which is still airing until now although Kris left the show in favor of her family, and is now hosted by Edu Manzano.
Kris has two talk shows in 2001 namely "Balitang Kris", after "Today With Kris Aquino" ended, and "Kris And Tell", an afternoon talk show. Kris then teamed with Korina Sanchez with "Morning Girls with Korina and Kris". They were originally scheduled to do the hosting for the show for only two weeks until ABS-CBN can find replacement to the orignal hosts (Carmina Villaruel and Pops Fernandez) who transferred to rival station GMA-7. But Kris and Korina's chemistry was so strong that the show topped the TV rating charts that forced the station to prolong their hosting and lasted for 16 months. The show ended only when ABS-CBN management tapped Korina to host "Rated K".
Kris remained in the morning slot and changed the title of the program to "Good Morning Kris" although Korina's departure affected the rating of the show. She was then tapped to go into primetime with a drama series "Hiram" which marked the entry of Kris in primetime soap operas.
Due to Kris' hosting prowess she showed in "Game Ka Na Ba", she again hosted another game show "Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal" which was slated in primetime. The show was so high in ratings that it lasted for two years from 2006 to 2008. In between those years, Kris also partnered again with Boy Abunda in a morning talk show titled "Boy and Kris". Due to their chemistry, the show got a huge following and it toppled all its competitors in its timeslot. It also lasted for more than one year due to its success in the ratings.
Kris Aquino was once again featured in the primetime with her horror series "Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara" which also made its impact to the Filipino audience. "Wheel of Fortune" was the next project of Kris, which was a local franchise for the said US show. In 2008, due to the popularity of Kris as host of "Deal or No Deal", NBC contracted her to do a world tour of "Deal or No Deal" and it was shown in the United States. That also prompted the sequel of the Philippines version dubbed as "Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal - Season 2".
ABS-CBN made a gamble in one of its primetime slot. When the primetime was full of asianovelas, they put Kris and Boy Abunda in a showbiz talk show, "SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon", to compete in that time slot. Many critics predicted that the show would not last and it would go to the bottom of the ratings ladder. But the chemistry of Kris and Boy again prevailed and proved all critics wrong. In fact, as of this writing, the show is still in the air and it is still going strong in the ratings game.
Kris also hosted a late night game show titled "Pinoy Bingo Night" which did well in the ratings and gave fortune to a lot of Filipinos.
When her mother, former president Cory Aquino, was fighting against cancer and then passed away, Kris hosted various programs as tribute to her. These were "Salamat President Cory", "Laban Ni Cory", " Salamat President Cory: Huling Paalam" and "Salamat President Cory: A People's Farewell".
Kris is scheduled to do a drama series again for 2010 which is titled "Maghintay Ka Lamang". Details for this primetime opera is yet to disclosed by the Kapamilya network as of this writing.
Kris Aquino started in movies with a bang. She debuted in the comey-drama movie "Pido Dida" with the late comedian Rene Requiestas. The movie broke the box office record for that year (1990) that earned Kris the distinction "Box Office Queen Award". The movie also had its sequels "Pido Dida 2: Kasal Na" and "Pido Dida 3: May Kambal Na" which also made a record in the box office.
She also starred in a drama movie "Pangako Ng Puso" and horror flick "Shake, Rattle 7 Roll 3". It is also notable that Kris was also called the "Massacre Queen" of Philippine showbiz due to her portrayal of rel life massacre movies such as "The Vizconde Massacre", "Myrna Diones Story", "Elsa Catillo - Ang Katotohanan" and "Humanda Ka Mayor" which all topped the Philippine box office.
Kris' acting prowess was noticed in her performance in "The Fatima Buen Story" which earned her an acting award nomination for the Gawad Urian. Kris then won the Best supporting Actress of the Year for the film "Mano Po" in the 19th PMPC Star Awards for Movies in 2003.
In the box office, Kris proved her dominance when her movie "Feng Shui" topped the box office record as the highest grossing film in 2004. It comes next to Spiderman 2 as the top grossing film in the Philippines for that year. But what nailed Kris to her throne as the box office queen is another horror movie "Sukob" which until now is the record to beat in the box office. "Sukob" is the highest grossing local movie of all time and that record, as stated above, is yet to be broken. That movie is also the last for Kris as she decided to concentrate in TV and to her family.
